Although Google + is the place to be for SEO (Search Engine Optimisation), let’s face it it’s not exactly user friendly for businesses. When you create your Google + business page your address contains a string of numbers to identify you. When giving your Google + address to clients etc, the option you’re probably faced with is having to quote this string so “visit us at Google+ 1001230998” etc. Not exactly sexy.
Wouldn’t it be incredibly thrilling if you could just say “visit us at Google + my business”? Not to mention putting it onto your busines cards, email signatures etc. Google are rolling out customised URL’s to the select few but it’s not available to everyone just yet. (Note to self “find out how to become one of Google’s “select few”). Well fairies, now you can.
Whilst doing research for our “Google + for Business” workshop last week, we came across a super little tool at gplus.to. The sole function of the tool is to give convert your unique number, in our case “1001230998” into a user friendly customised URL. Now instead of quoting the number, you can use your chosen URL or nickname.
To Create a customised URL for your Google+ Business Account
- Locate the number that currently identifies you. If you look up at your address bar when logged into Google + you will see the numbers around the middle section of the URL.
- Next, copy it (the number only).
- Open gplus.to on a new browser tab.
- Type in the name you wish to use as your customised URL under the “nickname” section.
- Paste your identifier number on the box opposite.
- Click the “Add” button.
You now have your own URL.
To check that it works type into a new Browser window/tab gplus.to/TheSmallBusinessFairy (using your own nickname instead of ours obviously). You can use this address or shortened URL on your marketing material. Come on over and join us, we’ll add you back to our circles.
